Help promote New York's Canals and help fellow canal enthusiasts at the same time!
NY Canals goal is to be a complete guide to canals of NY, both past and present. Directly or indirectly, if it has to with a New York Canal we want to share it with the world. Detailing nearly 300 years of canals is a lofty goal and it cannot be done alone, or even by a small group of people, thus we need everyone's help to make this project a success.
Editing made simple
At the top of nearly every page of the guide is a tab labeled Edit which allows anyone the ability to edit that page. So if you have anything to contribute, please do so. Many small contributions will add up to a very complete guide in no time. If you need more help on how to edit, please see below. Another thing that you may find helpful is to learn about the editing syntax used. If you still have a question, feel free to ask questions on the forum or email Greg at mail@nycanals.com.
If you have information, photos, movies, or anything else that you want to share, but do not have the time to do it yourself, please email it to mail@nycanals.com.

How to Edit an Existing Page
Editing an existing page is easy!
- Click Edit at the top of the page.
- In the editing box, change what you would like. (See editing help on syntax)
- Click Show Preview.
- Make sure that the page is as you would like it to be.
- If things are okay, click Save Page.
- If things are not okay, edit as before, and use Show Preview to check again.
If you change your mind, click cancel, and you will be returned to the page, without making any edits.
Add A New Page
To add a new page, first make sure that the page does not exist. Search for it with the search box. If you do not find it, then enter the full, proper name of the location into the search box and click search. If there are abbreviated names, those pages can be redirect to the proper page later.
Try to avoid a name that may describe something else. Using a simple name may confuse someone searching for a similar named article of a different area.
Once you type the proper name into the search box and submit it, a new window will come up with the red link saying to create this page. Click on this, and you will then be taken to a new editing page where you can begin to edit.
Each location is different, but it is easiest to copy the source code from a similar page when starting a new page. Thus if you are creating a new page about the canaltown Erieville, it is easiest to go to another canal town page (eg Rome, and click 'Edit') and copy and paste that into Erieville. Then just change the text as appropriate.
Adding a Picture
Adding a picture is easy once you know the syntax. Its best to copy and past the code from another location and then edit the filename and caption. Once you save the page, it will have a red link where your picture should be. Click on it, and then upload your picture there, as well as add a description of it. Note: Login required for uploading photos.
