Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 34
Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 34 is located in the Mindenville, NY near the modern Erie Canal Lock E16. This lock dates to the mid 1800s and one chamber was extended in the 1880s or 1890s to allow "double headers" (two barges tied together) to quickly lock through.
Today this lock is no longer complete, but it still is serving boaters. Located about 1000 feet west of Lock E16, the one remaining wall allows boaters to tie-up for the night. If you look closely, three recessed areas are visible. One on each end, and one in the middle. The middle recess once was the end recess, but when the chamber was lengthened, it became unnecessary.
