Fonda and Fultonville are two towns on opposite sides of the Mohawk River, but from the canalist's point of view are one town. Attractions in town include the Fonda Speedway where local racers compete weekly. Racing enthusiasts will enjoy the proximity to the track, just across the street from the terminal wall. In town there are a few small businesses and it is worth a walk to stretch your legs if you are stopping in the area.
On the northern side of the canal is the home of a NYS Canal Corporation Maintenance Headquarters, which is available for boaters to use as a mooring wall. This makes a good overnight stop on this stretch of the canal, albeit not quite as ideal as Canajoharie and Amsterdam. It does not have any boater services. Note that the area is enclosed by a gate which is great for security, but make sure you retrieve a key inside the office before leaving, otherwise you will be left to find a creative way to make it back to you vessel if the gate is locked.
Visitors in early September can experience the Montgomery County Fair, which is fun for the whole family. It is located adjacent to the Terminal Wall at the Speedway/Fairgrounds.
