Lock E8 is located just outside Scotia on the Erie Canal. The Canalway trail is adjacent to the lock and makes for a good stop to take a walk if you needing to stretch your legs.
A couple of ice fishermen have made use of the lock for ice fishing. Both the upper gates and lower gates of the lock are closed, but the valves that let river water into the lock are open and apparently they are large enough for the fish to come and go through. The ice in the lock is at the river water level. The men caught some walleye and yellow perch. Though the Canal Corporation probably doesn't condone ice fishing in the lock there is no one there on the weekend to tell the fishermen they can't go into the lock. They have a power-auger lying on the ice, and have made at least 7 holes in the ice to fish through.
